Tell the EPA to curb airplane emissions now!

If the commercial aviation industry were a country, it would rank seventh -- after Germany -- in terms of carbon emissions. And that pollution is projected to more than triple by 2050. I think you’d agree that that's an unacceptable climate threat.

But instead of fighting this fast-growing menace, the EPA wants to pass the buck to a group that's virtually run by the airline industry -- The International Civil Aviation Organization. This agency hasn't produced a single measure to curb aircraft-induced global warming in 18 years.

Dear US EPA: Please don't hand off responsibility for addressing airplanes' fast-growing greenhouse pollution to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Your agency has rightly determined that aviation carbon emissions endanger human health and welfare by contributing to dangerous global warming. But the EPA must not pass the buck on airplane emissions to ICAO, an international aviation organization that hasn't produced a single measure to curb aircraft-induced global warming in 18 years. Airplane carbon pollution is growing rapidly and, without strong action, these emissions could more than triple by midcentury. - EPA should immediately propose and adopt US standards that go far beyond the options currently being considered by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). - Under the Clean Air Act the EPA has the authority to propose a fleet-wide CO2 averaging system that is sufficiently stringent to stabilize U.S. aviation emissions. - EPA’s proposed standards should also address the fact that the industry is already implementing retrofits that are effectively reducing CO2 emissions. Please confront this threat to our climate by working quickly to set ambitious rules for airplane emissions. Sincerely,
