Dear Senators Heller and Bennett, As the Senate Finance committee continues to review proposals for fundamental tax reform, we urge the working group on Community Development and Infrastructure to look closely at the issue of fossil fuel subsidies. Tax preferences for oil, gas, and coal have existed in our tax code for over a century. Special deductions such as the depletion allowance, intangible drilling costs, the domestic manufacturing deduction, and last-in-first-out accounting should be repealed in order to raise much-needed revenue. Closing these and other industry loopholes could generate over $100 billion over the coming decade while simultaneously lessening the threat of climate disruption. Sincerely,
