This is a loose English summary of what Nadia Shevchenko wrote, from Goteborg. nadiyka@mail.ru At 22:00 on June 16 after a protest against police violence, Artyom Shlenov from Rainbow Keepers and International Social Ecological Union was arrested and accused of taking part in mass disturbances. The Russian Consulate is of little help and they have no information about why he is being arrested and where he is being held. There are witnesses, not only Russian but Swedish who will testify that not only Artyom but everybody who went to this protest on June 16 conducted themselves peacefully. Artyom came separately from the Russian groups on the invitation of Feltsbiologerna who wanted to take place in an alternative summit which didn't take place because of the police blockade and arrests. The protest against police violence was peaceful. It started at 19:00. Police blocked the square and isolated and surrounded demonstrators. Not only demonstrators but also bystanders like people shopping, selling or buying hotdogs found themselves in this trap. Police even raided public toilets that were there and beat the people in them with sticks. Mounted police arrived which horrified many who hadn't seen them in action before. Then they started a face control and either let people go or put them into a bus. Artyom, along with a friend was arrested. They filled up five buses, each holding up to 60 people. Then a non-uniformed person appeared in the bus and asked where the Russians were. For whatever reason they took Artyom and sat him in the police car. The rest the took somewhere out of town to some deserted army barracks and held them there in their container-cages for a few hours and then released them. There was no information from the police and it was only possible to find out about Artyom's arrest through unofficial people. On June 19 we were able to find out that he would be there under arrest for 2 more weeks. 52 other people who were arrested between June 14-16 are in the same situation. In all, according to the support group, there are 68 people under arrest and accused of taking part in mass disturbances. The police aren't giving any other information. The arrested are being held in isolated chambers and cannot have visitors except close relatives and are even forbidden to read newspapers or watch TV. Only on the 19th they managed to try to give a book for Artyom but were told that they can't even send him a fiction book to read. But there hoping that they will be able to give books and it seems that letters will be allowed, so send them. Each person will have a free lawyer but we aren't sure that everybody knows that because there's only contact with relatives and police-appointed lawyers.
