In fact, masses of people are inhibited by fear of pervasive surveillance: after Snowden showed everyone how much the US tracks people's browsing, there was a 20% decrease in visits to Wikipedia pages about topics relating to terrorism.

This is in addition to the fact that massive surveillance endangers democracy, and that harms all of us.
