I continue to be the Chief GNUisance of the GNU Project.
This is my long-term commitment and I plan to continue.
You may have heard or read critical statements about me; please make up your own mind.
I am making a second visit to Europe this year after February. If you are interested in inviting me to speak there, and you have a venue to use and a public to invite, please email me in March with "speaking invitation" in the Subject field, using the name rms and the host gnu dot org. One advantage of this period for you is that the intercontinental flights are already covered, so you won't need to pay for that.

This is the personal web site of Richard Stallman.
The views expressed here are my personal views, not those of the Free Software Foundation or the GNU Project.
For the sake of separation, this site has always been hosted elsewhere and managed separately.

If you want to send me GPG-encrypted mail, do not trust key servers! Some of them have phony keys under my name and email address, made by someone else as a trick. See gpg.html for my real key.

Richard Stallman has cancer. Fortunately it is slow-growing and manageable follicular lymphoma. Treatment put it into remission, and he can expect to live many more years. However, he now has to be even more careful not to catch Covid-19.

FSF Giving Guide

Canadians: I suggest you seek election advice at a local chapter of a group that pushes to curb global heating and has the courage to say, "Canada should stop exporting fossil fuel." It will at least use the right goals to suggest who to vote for in your area.

That page is made by scraping Fridays for Future so you can get the information without running any Javascript code. I would be very glad if they made the information on their own site accessible from the Free World; then we could simply refer people to their site and do without the scraping etc.

Harvard University heroic efforts
16 April 2025

Harvard has refused to surrender to the bully/cheater's political demands and will fight them in court. Bravo!

*Harvard University faculty sue to block Trump review of nearly $9bn in funding.*

It is futile to make a deal with the bully/cheater, since he does not hesitate to cancel a deal, or cheat. Once you choose the path of appeasement, he will demand more and more appeasement.

The bully/cheater told Columbia that giving him all he had demanded was not enough to have its research funds reinstated.

Foreign, business, US bribes now OK, US
16 April 2025

The wrecker has ended prosecution of US companies for paying bribes in other countries. He claims that, in places where bribery is normal, the US companies should not be at a disadvantage in that game.

This article argues that the game is bad for the companies that play it, and that US companies will be better off if corruption is kept down.

Xi in Vietnam
16 April 2025

The bully claims that Chairman Xi is in Vietnam to develop ways to screw the US. He might very well want to screw the US, but he no longer needs to figure out ways to do it. It suffices to pick up the opportunities that the bully throws his way.

Urgent: Hold Big Oil accountable
16 April 2025

US citizens: call on your state governor and attorney general to hold Big Oil accountable for its climate crimes.

Urgent: Reject the "SAVE" act
16 April 2025

US citizens: call on The Senate to reject the "SAVE" Act, short for Suppress All sorts of Voters Explicitly.

Making sense of what the corrupter means
16 April 2025

An attempt to make sense of what the corrupter means by what he says. It proposes a model of how he thinks about his actions and their aims: he has no principles, no values except gain, and no loyalty except for mutual gain.

When he causes havoc, it is not always that he is unaware of the damage his acts can do to others. Sometimes he just doesn't care.

It makes sense that he inclines towards promoting prejudice, hatred and cruelty: because they insulate a person from values and loyalty other than taking away from others.

The hardest challenge for those who wish to restore the former (partial and insufficient) role of principle, loyalty and justice will be how to defeat that empire without sinking to the corrupter's level and thus replacing one corrupter with another.

Palestinian medics survivor
16 April 2025

A survivor among the group of Palestinian medics massacred in Gaza, who was missing afterward, has been found — imprisoned by Israel.

Being recorded as "dead" by Social Security Agency
16 April 2025

Being erroneously recorded as "dead" by the Social Security Agency can be disastrous. The problems it causes might kill you.

Wrecker eager to do damage to California
15 April 2025

The wrecker is eager to do damage to California. Could that be one of his reasons for provoking trade war?

Unusual tattoo listed as supposed gang tattoo
15 April 2025

A British man who has no connections with Venezuela or gangs found his own unusual tattoo listed in the Department of Horror and Suffering's supposed gang tattoo photo catalog. The tattoo depicts a clock showing the hour of his daughter's birth.

Now he is afraid to visit Miami with his family, afraid he might be imprisoned by the bully's cunning nincompoops.

Ships required to pay carbon emissions in 2028
15 April 2025

Starting in 2028, ships will be required to pay for their carbon emissions.

This is important for pressuring to make ships more efficient.

Republicans' love for children of unauthorized immigrants
15 April 2025

Republicans love the children of unauthorized immigrants … until they are born.

People asking for return of donations to Senator Fetterman
15 April 2025

People who made small campaign contributions to Senator Fetterman's campaign when he pretended to be progressive are asking for return of their donations.

Accusations US troops were sent to Panama
15 April 2025

Panama's opposition party accuses the bully of sending US troops to former US military bases in Panama — in effect, a clandestine invasion, though the government denies that it is one.

It reminds me of Putin's conquest of Crimea, though there are differences.

Israeli army unit that attacked ambulances
15 April 2025

The Israeli army unit that attacked a column of ambulances in Rafah, and murdered captured paramedics afterward, is under the command of a general who has encouraged killing any Arab whatsoever, and so have other officers.

White House may seek legally binding control over Columbia
15 April 2025

*White House may seek legally binding control over Columbia through consent decree – report.*

I don't think the wrecker aims to destroy Columbia; he wants to make it subservient. I wonder if New York State could pass a law forbidding the accreditation of a university that doesn't respect academic freedom, such that agreeing to such a consent decree would force it to cease to operate. (This would be something like the liberty-or-death-for-this-code clause of the GNU General Public License.)

If the wrecker wants to destroy that university, he could do it this way, but that changes little since he could destroy it in other ways. But if what he wants is to have it continue to exist in a subservient way, this could prevent it.

Chinese captain charged with damaging undersea cables
15 April 2025

*Taiwan charges Chinese captain with damaging undersea cables.*

Bravo for taking action against this covert form of warfare.

Federal prosecutors ordered to ignore cryptocurrency corruption
15 April 2025

The corrupter ordered federal prosecutors to avert their eyes from cryptocurrency corruption.

Countries to Stay Away From

No national identity cards

I'd like to make a list of countries that do not require a national identity card, and have no plans to adopt one. If you live in or have confirmed knowledge of such a country, please send email to rms at gnu.org.

Here's my list of countries with no national ID cards and no plans for one: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK. Australia's previous government tried to institute national ID cards, but the Labor government dropped the plan.

India has mostly finished imposing a national biometric ID number in a grand act of oppression.

Switzerland has national ID cards which are optional, but they or some other government ID card are needed for some purposes.

Iceland doesn't have ID cards as such, but they have ID numbers that citizens are forced to use frequently. For example, the national ID number is often required to rent a video or use a gym.

Denmark issues non-photo ID cards with a "person number", and many services use this card to identify people.

Norway will impose a national biometric ID card.

Ireland - national ID card by stealth.

Wikipedia has a list of identity card policies by country.

The Lifelong Activist

People often ask how I manage to continue devoting myself to progressive activism (such as the free software movement) for years without burning out. The best way I can answer is by recommending a book, The Lifelong Activist by Hillary Rettig.

I disagree with the book on one theoretical point in the last part of the book: we shouldn't think of political activism as being marketing and sales, because those terms refer to business, and politics is something much more important than mere business. However, this doesn't diminish the value of the book's practical advice about borrowing techniques from marketing and sales.

Disclosure: I am friends with the author.

Political notes

"Those who profess to favor freedom, yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will."

Here are notes about various issues I care about, usually with links to more information. The current notes are here. For all previous notes, see this page.
